It sounds to me like your laptop is not providing enough power for both devices. Many laptop manufacturers limit the amount of power provided through the USB ports to conserve battery life and I think this is what has happened to you as well.
Do you (or one of your friends) have a desktop computer that you could test your Deck boards on to make sure it is not a problem with the board itself? Other than that I can't suggest anything else at this time. Also please keep in mind that you are welcome to return it for repairs within one year, or a refund if within 30 days.
