I think Deck keyboards rock, but I'm disappointed that the default key layout has the common feature of Caps to the left of "A" and Ctrl in the lower corner. This requires a programmer to twist his hand for frequent use of the Ctrl key. My old Sun, Wyse, TeleVideo, and NeXT keyboards all had Ctrl where God meant it to be: to the left of "A". Programmers tend to use Ctrl a lot, especially if they code in Vi or VIM or Emacs, or edit their command lines. Having to continually twist the hand to reach a Ctrl key in the lower left corner is a hand-cramping pain. Putting Caps to the left of "A" seems to me a hold-over from the days of typewriters, but a waste of prime keyboard real-estate for many of us.

Other keyboards that have Ctrl in a "unix friendly" position include the Happy Hacker keyboards and the Unicomp "Linux" keyboard. I'm posting to ask if this might be a more appropriate layout for the Deck. How many of Decks customers would rather have Caps and Ctrl switched?

It would be very cool to be able to buy a Deck and not have to swap Caps / Ctrl in software. It's not a deal-breaker, though. I've swapped Caps / Ctrl in my linux and Mac systems. Unfortunately, after swapping the functions of these keys, it doesn't appear to be possible to swap their key caps on the Deck, because Caps and Ctrl have different-sized caps. Would it be possible for Deck to provide caps for these two keys with the correct size for swapping, for those of us who go ahead and swap the functions in software?

Thanks,

--David

Thanks for the feedback. We don't plan on making any keycaps other than the ones that already come on the Deck or included in the accesory keycap sets but we will keep it in mind. If we ever make another revision of our current boards or come out with new boards in the future we may include this. As far as the software is concerned, we aren't planning on doing this due to lack of demand amongst the majority of our customers.

Im sorry if this isn't the answer you wanted, but in today's world its all comes back to the almighty dollar, and unfortunately if we did every small customization that everyone wants we would be broke.

Count me in on the CapsLock / Ctrl key swap. For me, just the key caps would be fine as I swapped these in the Windoze registry... Another option would be a pair of jumpers to swap their physical wiring in a future board rev.

I wouldn't want a mandatory swap, but wouldn't care if it was optional. I guess I'm blessed with a dextrous pinky, I've never had problems with twisting to use the control keys. I would rather have the kbd using the same config I get everywhere else I go for familiarity sake. Customizable would be fine though.
